Human Rights in Iran – on Saturday, April 18th 2020, the Supreme Court, with issuance a verdict, upheld for the third time the death sentence of Arsalan Khodkam, a political prisoner detained in Ward 3-4 of Urmia Central Prison. After his arrest, this political prisoner was trialed by Revolutionary Court of Urmia, and sentenced to death on the charge of propaganda against the System through membership in anti-regime dissident Parties.
According to Human Rights in Iran, citing Human Rights Organization in Iran, on Saturday, April 18th 2020, Arsalan Khodkam, a political prisoner, incarcerated in Urmia Central Prison was sentenced to death for the third time in a row by the Supreme Court. Earlier, the Supreme Court had upheld for two times the death sentence of this political prisoner.
According to this report, the charge of ” propaganda against the System through membership and involvement in anti-regime dissident Parties “, has led to this sentence for Arsalan Khodkam.
According to an informed credible: ” The IRGC is seeking the execution of Arsalan Khodkam. Arsalan’s appeal had been rejected twice before, and over the past few months the Supreme Court had sought to overturn this sentence. Because of this verdict, his father went to Tehran many times, but finally he was told that the case had a realtor and the realtor was the IRGC. “
Arsalan Khodkam, a native of Mahabad, is married and has a 16-year-old son.
On February, 3rd 2018, the death sentence of this political prisoner was commuted to 10 years in prison, but following the objection by IRGC this sentence was cancelled and referred for revision to the Supreme Court.
Arsalan Khodkam became a member of IRGC in the 1990s. After 16 years of membership in IRGC, when he had gone on a mission to Oshnavieh city, he was arrested because of communication with Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), and after spending 26 days in solitary confinement was trialled and sentenced to death by branch 1 of Military Court in Urmia. On September 25th 2018, this sentence was exactly confirmed after being referred to branch 32 of the Supreme Court.
It should be noted that the crime of espionage is one of accusations that is completely rejected by Human Rights Organization, but during the recent years in Iran, Iranian security officials, especially the IRGC has arrested many citizens without any real accusation of espionage. They have sentenced many persons to long-term Imprisonment or to death in continuation of accusing them of ” espionage and collaboration with a hostile government ” or because of the charge named ” influence project “.
The suppression of civil activists and the imposition of restriction on their citizenship are some instances of Human Rights and Freedom of Speech violations that in International Instrument of Human Right, Article 19 Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 19 International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights adopted on December 16th 1966, there is an emphasis on individuals freedom to release their thoughts and opinions regardless of any consideration for boundary limitations.
Also having the right of access to a fair trial is one of the inalienable rights accentuated in Article 10 of Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
