Human Rights in Iran – Saturday, September 3, 2022 – The death sentence of a prisoner with drug-related crimes was carried out in Langarud prison of Qom Province.

According to the report of Human Rights in Iran, at dawn on Thursday, September 1, 2022, Mohammad Khosravi, 30 years old, a prisoner accused of drug crimes and jailed in the central prison (Langarud) of Qom Province, was executed.

“Mohammad Khosravi had been arrested about three years ago and sentenced to death on the charge of drug trafficking. Along with him, two others were arrested and only he was sentenced to death. All two of Mohammad Khosravi’s co-defendants were sentenced to 10 years and 14 years in prison.”, according to an informed source, in an interview with Iran Human Rights Organization.

Considering the execution of Mohammad Khosravi and the execution of Hamid Gharalar, the number of prisoners executed last week in Qom Central Prison increased to two.

So far, the execution of these two prisoners has not been announced by the media inside Iran or by official sources.

After the appointment of Gholam-Hossein Mohseni Ezhe’ei as the head of the judiciary and his claim to speed up the execution of old cases and as a result the execution of death sentences with the aim of reducing the country’s criminal crimes, this process lead to the protest of Amnesty International by publishing a report on 27th June, 2022, explaining the situation of the implementation of death sentences in the first 6 months of 2022 in Iran.

Also, on August 23, 2022, Javaid Rehman, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights, in his periodic report on cases of human rights violations in Iran, protested the increasing process of issuing and executing death sentences in Iran.

Due to the non-transparency of the Iranian authorities, it is difficult to find out the actual number of executions in this country, and the number is certainly much higher than the announced figure.

Issuing and executing death sentences violates international human rights documents, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the provisions of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
