Human Rights in Iran – Sunday, September 4, 2022 – The death sentences of two prisoners were carried out at Zahedan Central Prison on political and murder charges.

According to Human Rights in Iran report, at dawn on Saturday, September 3, 2022, Mohsen Ghanbarzehi, born in 1978, single, and Einollah Ghanbarzehi, son of Abdorrahman, born in 1989, married with four children, two prisoners from the village of Shandak in Zahedan located in Sistan and Baluchestan Provence, were executed in Zahedan Central Prison on murder charges.

Mohsen (Nasrollah) Ghanbarzehi was 16 years old at the time of his arrest, and on September 1 (2022), he was transferred to solitary confinement from the general ward of Zahedan Central Prison along with Einollah Ghanbarzehi, and on September 2 (2022), they had the last visitation with their families, according to this report.

Einollah Ghanbarzehi was arrested by security forces along with his niece Mohsen (Nasrollah) Ghanbarzehi in 2012, and after being transferred to the Revolutionary Guards Intelligence Detention Center in Zahedan, both of them were informed of their charges during interrogation and investigation proceedings.

With the beginning of the proceedings, Einollah and Mohsen (Nasrollah) Ghanbarzehi were tried by the Criminal Court of this city and the Revolutionary Court of Zahedan, presided over by Judge Mahdavian, and they were sentenced to death on charges of “acting against national security through cooperation with anti-regime groups” and “killing a member of the IRGC”.

It should be noted that in 2019, these two prisoners published an open letter describing the interrogation process and emphasizing that all the items included in the interrogation papers were accompanied by intimidation, threats, beatings and torture of intelligence interrogators of the Zahedan Revolutionary Guards.

Among the tortures of these individuals are the burial of Einollah Ghanbarzehi from the neck down in the soil to obtain a forced confession by IRGC intelligence interrogators.

The execution of these two prisoners has not been announced by the media inside Iran or official sources so far.

After the appointment of Gholam-Hossein Mohseni Ezhe’ei as the head of the judiciary and his claim to speed up the enforcement of old cases and as a result the implementation of death sentences with the aim of reducing the country’s criminal crimes, this process lead to the protest of Amnesty International by publishing a report on 27th June, 2022, explaining the situation of the implementation of death sentences in the first 6 months of 2022 in Iran.

Also, on August 23, 2022, Javaid Rehman, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights, in his periodic report on cases of human rights violations in Iran, protested the increasing process of issuing and executing death sentences in Iran.

Due to the non-transparency of the Iranian authorities, it is difficult to find out the actual number of executions in this country, and the number is certainly much higher than the announced figure.

Issuing and executing death sentences violates international human rights documents, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the provisions of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
