Execution Of 7 Prisoners At Rajaei-Shahr Prison In Karaj

Human Rights in Iran – Thursday, September 8, 2022 – The death sentences of 10 prisoners were carried out at Rajaei-Shahr Prison in Karaj.

According to Human Rights in Iran report, at dawn on Wednesday, September 7, 2022, Mohammad Arab, Khosrow Noorbakhsh, Abolfazl Shahi, along with 4 other prisoners on death row and imprisoned in Rajaei-Shahr Prison were executed. Also, a prisoner named Mohammad Abdolrahim was returned to the general ward after obtaining a deadline from the authorities.

“A few days ago, these 8 individuals were transferred to solitary confinement from the general ward of Rajaei-Shahr Prison in Karaj, but on Wednesday morning, the death sentences of 7 prisoners were carried out mainly for murder-related offenses.”, a well-informed source told the reporter of Human Rights in Iran.

“Mohammad Abdolrahim, a prisoner accused of murder, was able to get time from the authorities to obtain the consent of the victim’s family and his execution was suspended”, the source added.

The source continued: “The death sentences of these prisoners were carried out between 3:00 and 4:00 a.m. on Wednesday.”

It should be mentioned that all of these 8 prisoners had been transferred to solitary confinement since September 4 (2022), for the enforcement of their death sentences.

After the appointment of Gholam-Hossein Mohseni Ezhe’ei as the head of the judiciary and his claim to speed up the enforcement of old cases and as a result the implementation of death sentences with the aim of reducing the country’s criminal crimes, this process lead to the protest of Amnesty International by publishing a report on 27th June, 2022,explaining the situation of the implementation of death sentences in the first 6 months of 2022 in Iran.

Also, on August 23, 2022, Javaid Rehman, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights, in his periodic report on cases of human rights violations in Iran, protested the increasing process of issuing and executing death sentences in Iran.

Due to the non-transparency of the Iranian authorities, it is difficult to find out the actual number of executions in this country, and the number is certainly much higher than the announced figure.

Issuing and executing death sentences violates international human rights documents, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the provisions of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
