Execution Of 5 Prisoners At Zahedan Prison

Human Rights in Iran – Saturday, September 10, 2022 – The death sentences of five prisoners, including a female detainee, were carried out at Zahedan Central Prison on murder-related charges.

According to the report of Human Rights in Iran, Khaled Raeisi born in 1984, Amrollah Basij born in 1995, Abdol-Nasir Shahbakhsh born in 1980, Houshang Kurd born in 1985, along with a female prisoner with unknown identity, incarcerated in Zahedan Prison, Sistan and Balochistan Province, were executed at dawn on Saturday 10, 2022.

In an interview with the reporter of Human Rights in Iran, an informed source said: “Khaled Raeisi was arrested on March 23, 2019 in Chabahar city on murder charges.”

“Amrollah Basij and Abdol-Nasir Shahbakhsh were arrested on separate murder charges in 2019 and sentenced to death after proceedings.”, the source added.

This informed source noted in another part of the interview: “Houshang Kurd, another executed prisoner, was arrested in 2016, on charges related to murder.”

As of this report, the execution of these five prisoners has not been published by the official media inside the country.

After the appointment of Gholam-Hossein Mohseni Ezhe’ei as the head of the judiciary and his claim to speed up the enforcement of old cases and as a result the implementation of death sentences with the aim of reducing the country’s criminal crimes, this process lead to the protest of Amnesty International by publishing a report on 27th June, 2022,explaining the situation of the implementation of death sentences in the first 6 months of 2022 in Iran.

Also, on August 23, 2022, Javaid Rehman, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights, in his periodic report on cases of human rights violations in Iran, protested the increasing process of issuing and executing death sentences in Iran.

Due to the non-transparency of the Iranian authorities, it is difficult to find out the actual number of executions in this country, and the number is certainly much higher than the announced figure.

Issuing and executing death sentences violates international human rights documents, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the provisions of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
