Labor activist Valeh Zamani arrested

Human Rights in Iran – Wednesday, October 7, 2020 / Security forces in Tehran arrested Valeh Zamani, a labor activist and transferred him to an unknown location.

According to Human Rights in Iran, in the early hours of Tuesday morning, October 6th (2020), Valeh Zamani, a labor activist living in Andisheh town of Shahriar County (west of Tehran Province), was arrested by Tehran security forces and transferred to an undisclosed location.

Security forces reportedly went to the private residence of the labor activist and arrested him.

As of this writing, no information is available on the reasons for the arrest and the charges against this labor activist.

Labor activist Valeh Zamani had previously been arrested by security forces on September 20, 2015, and after being moved to the detection facility of the security forces and undergoing interrogation and being charged, was temporarily released on September 28, 2015 on 200 milion Tomans bail.

This labor activist was arrested along with Behnam Ebrahimzadeh and Peyman Salem on September 13, 2017, during a rally of civil activists in protest of the dire situation of prisoners in Raja’i Shahr Prison in Karaj. After being transferred to the detention facility of the security forces and passing the interrogation process, he was released from custody on September 29, 2017, on bail.

Valeh Zamani, a labor activist and a member of Alborz Painters’ Union, was detained by security forces during a protest rally in May 1, 2017, International Workers’ Day, and was released shortly afterwards.

After that, on July 15, 2018, Valeh Zamani was summoned to the interrogation branch of the Security Court in Evin Prison and re-interrogated.

The repression of labor activists and the imposition of security charges against them violates Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as well as Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, adopted on December 16, 1966.

The impossibility of access to a lawyer and the denial of access to other rights in a trial process violates Article 9 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 9 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, adopted on December 16, 1966.

The right of individuals to a fair trial by a judge, interrogator and inspector is one of the inalienable rights enshrined in Article 10 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Article 5 of the Criminal Procedure Code stipulates that the accused shall be informed of the charges and provided access to a lawyer as soon as possible. Other defensive rights are mentioned in law, but extrajudicial actions taken by the security services violate the laws that they themselves drafted and claim to be enforced.
