Human Rights in Iran – Tuesday, October 4, 2022 – Security forces arrested Atash Shakarami in Khorramabad, the capital of Lorestan Province.

According to the report of Human Rights in Iran, in recent days, Atash Shakarami, the aunt of Nika Shakarami, a resident of Khorramabad, the capital of Lorestan Province, was arrested by security forces and transferred to an unknown location. Nika Shakarami’s funeral was also held as security agencies prevented her body from being buried in the cemetery desired by her family.

The reason for Atash Shakarami’s arrest by security forces was her activities online and information she had provided about her niece’s death in cyberspace, according to the report.

It should be noted that Nika Shakarami, born in 2005, a resident of Tehran, went missing on September 20 (2022), after she set fire to her headscarf on Keshavarz Boulevard in Tehran, during nationwide protests against the death of Mahsa Amini, and her body was found after 11 days.

Nika Shakarami’s funeral was held on Monday, October 3, when security forces refused to allow her body to be buried at Salehin Cemetery in Khorramabad and after the 17-year-old girl’s body was seized and transported to the desired location by security agencies, she was buried in the village of Veisian, Khorramabad.

On September 22, 2022, Amnesty International issued a statement calling for urgent global action to counter the deadly crackdown on protests against Mahsa Amini’s death.

Since the announcement of the death of Mahsa (Zhina) Amini, a 22-year-old girl who had traveled to Tehran from Saqez to meet with relatives, who was arrested by security police officers on the pretext that the hijab was “inappropriate” and died after being transferred to the Security Police Detention Center in Tehran, there have been widespread protests about the performance of the Morality Police (Gasht-e Ershad : The Guidance Patrol) in various cities of the country.

The repression of citizens and the designation of accusations based on the scenario of security agencies violates Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, adopted on December 16, 1966.

In addition, the right to a fair trial by an impartial judge, interrogator, and investigator is among the rights highlighted in Article 10 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The impossibility of the accused to have access to a lawyer, as well as denying the person access to other necessities in a judicial process, violates Article 9 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 9 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, adopted on December 16, 1966.

In Article 5 of the Criminal Procedure Law, it is emphasized on informing the accused as soon as possible about the alleged charges and providing the right of access to a lawyer and other defense rights mentioned in the law.
