Human Rights in Iran – Monday, September 12, 2022 – The death sentences of two prisoners were carried out in Zanjan and Birjand prisons on murder and narcotics offences.

According to the report of Human Rights in Iran, Mansoor Barahuei, born in 1996, son of Khodarahm, married and father of two young children, from Zahedan, a prisoner charged with drug offenses, was executed on Saturday, September 10, at Birjand County Prison. Also, at dawn on Sunday, September 11, Mehdi Aghoosh, born in 1992, a prisoner accused of murder and incarcerated in Zanjan Central Prison, was executed.

“Mansoor was arrested in Birjand in 2019 on charges of drug trafficking and was sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court of Birjand,” a well-informed source told Haalvash news agency about Mansoor Barahuei’s execution.

Furthermore, regarding the execution of Mehdi Aghoosh, an informed source told Iran Human Rights Organization: “Mehdi Aghoosh was a hairdresser before he was imprisoned and had committed murder in a mass brawl since 2019 and was being held in prison. He had gone to the gallows twice more for the implementation of death sentence and the victim’s family had given him a deadline.”

The execution of these two prisoners has not been announced by the media inside Iran or official sources so far.

After the appointment of Gholam-Hossein Mohseni Ezhe’ei as the head of the judiciary and his claim to speed up the enforcement of old cases and as a result the implementation of death sentences with the aim of reducing the country’s criminal crimes, this process lead to the protest of Amnesty International by publishing a report on 27th June, 2022,explaining the situation of the implementation of death sentences in the first 6 months of 2022 in Iran.

Also, on August 23, 2022, Javaid Rehman, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights, in his periodic report on cases of human rights violations in Iran, protested the increasing process of issuing and executing death sentences in Iran.

Due to the non-transparency of the Iranian authorities, it is difficult to find out the actual number of executions in this country, and the number is certainly much higher than the announced figure.

Issuing and executing death sentences violates international human rights documents, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the provisions of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
