Human Rights in Iran – Friday, April 17th 2020 Afshin Baymani, a political prisoner incarcerated in Ward 4, Corridor 10 of Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj, is denied access to medical services. This politcal prisoner is serving his life sentence and up to today has served about 20 years in prison.
According to the report by Human Rights in Iran, Friday, April 17th 2020, Afshin Baymani, the political prisoner, imprisoned in Ward 4, Corridor 10 of Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj who is suffering from heart disease, is deprived of accessibilty to medical services and being dispatched to a medical center outside Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj. Afshin Baymani has been serving his life sentence since 20 years ago.
In an interview with Human Rights in Iran reporter, an informed source said: ” While Afshin Baymani suffers from cardiac bypass, he needs to be sent to specialty medical center, but he is deprived of this, and over 20 years of being serving his life Imprisonment, he is only 4 times sent on a leave x however due to the deteriorating condidion of his heart disease, this politcal prisoner needs to be admitted to a specialty medical center. “
Human Rights in Iran has notified in several reports about the continuation of this politcal prisoner’s deprivation of access to medical services, as well as his deprivation of the right to leave, which is every politcal prisoner’s right.
It should be noted that Afshin Baymani is married and has two children. He was arrested with his wife and children on Tuesday, September 5th 2000, in charge of assisting the escape of his brother ” Mahdi Baymani “, who was accused of membership and activity with ” Mujahedin-e Kalq (MEK) Organization “. This politcal prisoner was under interrogation and severe physical, psychological pressures for months in solitary confinement of Intelligence Ministry’s Security Ward 209.
After the interrogation process, in primitive trial this politcal prisoner was sentenced to death on the charge of ” ties with Mujahedin-e Kalq ( MEK ) Organization. After the referring of the case to Revision Court in Tehran province, the sentence was exactly confirmed, but after 6 years his death sentence was commuted to life Imprisonment.
During his 19 years and 2 months in prison, Baymani has been tortured several times, transferred to solitary confinement and his telephone calls and visits is interrupted. Because of the severity of the torture, his right eye was exposed to blindness.
He also went on a hunger strike several times to protest the pressure inside the prison. For example, on Saturday, July 30th 2011, he was subjected to double pressure and went on a hunger strike. Also on Friday, December 23rd 2011, this politcal prisoner launched a hunger strike to protest against deprivation of his eye treatment. He was threatened in the case of not send his hunger strike, he would be exiled and another case would be filed against him.
In June 2013, Afshin Baymani after being transferred to ward 8 of Rajai Shahr Prison, was under the control of IRGC, and under 3-hours interrogation with beatings.
This politcal prisoner physically is faced with many problems, and he has had 2 heart attacks so far in prison. He has been denied the right to treatment and dispatching to therapeutic leave.
In mid-November 2014, the officials of Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj, unofficially informed him that charges of ” insulting the religious sanctities ” and ” insulting the leadership ” had been opened against him in connection with a new case.
This politcal prisoner was suddenly transferred along with ” Arjang Davoodi ” to IRGC’S ward 7 in Rajai Shahr Prison of Karaj on Sunday, January 18th 2015, and after spending 41 days under torture in solitary confinement, was taken to ward 4, corridor 12 in this prison.
He and other politcal prisoners in Rajai Shahr Prison were beaten in August 2017, and taken to extra security corridor 10 in this prison. He and other associates went on a 40-day hunger strike to protest the sudden move, which drew a high international and domestic support.
