Human Rights in Iran – Wednesday, August 12, 2020 / Security forces in the city of Shadegan in Khuzestan Province, arrested a citizen on charges of publishing a call for a protest rally.

According to the report of Human Rights in Iran cited from Mashregh News website, Mohammad Salehi, the deputy commander of the Khuzestan Law Enforcement Force, announced on Tuesday, August 11 (2020), the arrest of a citizen on charges of publishing a call for a protest rally and blocking the streets in the city.

Explaining the news, the deputy commander of the Khuzestan Law Enforcement Force claimed: “After the publication of calls through cyberspace inviting people to protest in the streets of Shadegan city, the issue was placed on the agenda.”

“Intelligence and public security police officers in Shadegan city identified and arrested the main cause of calling, inciting and inviting people to protest” Salehi added.

Article 5 of the Criminal Procedure Code stipulates that the accused shall be informed of the charges and provided access to a lawyer as soon as possible. Other defensive rights are mentioned in law, but extrajudicial actions taken by the security services violate the laws that they themselves drafted and claim to be enforced.

The denial of access to a lawyer at the time of detention and during interrogation violates international human rights instruments, Article 9 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 9 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, adopted on December 16, 1966.

The enjoyment of a fair trial is also one of the inalienable rights enshrined in Article 10 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
