Instagram activist arrested in Mazandaran province by security forces

Human Rights in Iran – On Tuesday, May 19th 2020 after the arrest of an Instagram activist, security forces in Mazandaran transferred him to an unknown location.

According to Human Rights in Iran quoting the Cyber Police website, on Tuesday, May 19th 2020, Same’ Khorshad, the head of Cyber Police in Mazandaran announced the arrest of an Instagram activist living in this province on charge of publishing images in cyberspace.

Same’ Khorshad, the head of Mazandaran Cyber Police continued: “During observation and monitoring by the experts of Mazandaran province, it was determined that a person with the Instagram page is attempting to publish unusual immoral images and the page of the defendant has a top 20,000 subscribers and visitors”.

The security official also added: “By conducting intelligence operations, the owner of the mentioned Instagram page, a young boy with a known identity living in one of the eastern cities of Mazandaran province was identified and then arrested”.

The suppression of the social network activists and the imposition of restrictions on their civil rights are among the most flagrant human rights violations of freedom of expression illustrated in UDHR article 19.

Article 5 of the Criminal Procedure Code stipulates that the accused shall be informed of the charges and provide access to a lawyer as soon as possible. Other defensive rights are mentioned in law, but extrajudicial actions taken by the security services violate the laws that they themselves drafted and claim to be enforced.

Individuals have the right to access a fair trial by an impartial tribunal, as enshrined in international human rights instruments, as well as article 10 of the UDHR and article 14 of ICCPR.
